Wacahoota is a small unincorporated community located in Alachua County, Florida, United States. It is situated about 17 miles southwest of Gainesville and has a population of around 500 people. The name Wacahoota is derived from the Native American word meaning "cow deer." The area was originally settled by pioneers in the 1830s and has a long history of farming, particularly of oranges and cattle. Today, the community is a rural area with several historic homes, a church, and a community center. It is also a popular destination for birdwatchers due to its proximity to Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park.
